not really. I get the impression that you're avoiding bike shops. If you are considering CL , Bikesdirect or used bikes you really should know more about bikes to assess whether what you're getting is in good shape and adjusted correctly. I just googled shops up there and found some perfectly good Norco and Trek bikes for under $500. In this price range you will find some bikes weighing 5lbs more so keep in mind how important weight is for lifting the bike. I woudn't get a bike with a front shock for your intended use and price range.

the Norco VFR Forma2 and Indie3 look like they're worth trying out. I would strongly suggest riding some bikes from a shop instead of educating yourself after buying some bike off of Craigslist.
