My only experience along these lines is my Kogswell, which had an 8-speed cassette, SunTour barcons and an old Deore RD. Never had a problem with any shift. I can't see why friction shifting would offer any difficulties as long as it covered the whole range of gears.

Good to know. All three RDs that I have in consideration for this project (modern Deore LX, older Deer-head, older Suntour XC) cover the whole range, so I guess I'm good to go...
(I guess I forgot to ask whether the Barcons had enough range to span the width of the cassette, but that was answered as well!)
