You should read Saint Sheldon's explanation of why you want butted spokes rather than straight gauge. If double butted spokes broke more often than straight gauge spokes, nobody would be buying them no matter what the manufacturers claimed...

I want to do a 48H rear this winter yet... I'll consider double's.
Given the quality of today's spokes and rims, 48-spoke wheels seem overkill for just about everything I can think of...
