I tried a helmet for winter riding six or seven years ago but that didn't work out. I would suggest ditching the helmet and go with a wool cap if you can bring yourself to ride without a helmet. I can say that once you go hat, you will never go back to a helmet.
In terms of comfort and warmth sure a thick soft wool hat or something like it is the best. But when you have to weigh safety concerns then the helmet takes on a more important role. Some people's insurance won't cover them while bike riding if they aren't wearing all the right safety equipment.
