Thumb shifters on a road bike

As I'm an aging man, I rarely find myself on the lower position of my bars, where I currently have end shifters. I would like to get the shifters on the top, where I ride. I've seen Paul's Thumbies, which enable you to do this, but is there any reason you cannot put some old friction MTB shifters up there? Is it a bar diameter issue? Thanks.
