This old winger and phabulous phantom phixer would have fired them too...though there were times I used commerical parts to keep a bird up rather than wait for the AWP mil-spec parts.
Point is, back here in the real world, the manuals are based on marketing and litigation avoidance as much as any technical realities. Brooks (now owned by Selle) makes money by selling Proofide too. You'll find some folks in here who have had the same small tin of proofide for decades. A little goes a long way.
