My number one suggestion would be take up learning bikes inside out as a hobby. Let go of some other activities that are a waste of time (everyone has some of these, whether it's useless television watching, or something else), and use the time to earn a little extra money and learn bikes.
Then you can do just about anything. You can salvage bikes and turn them into touring bikes. You can make a little money on the side. You can help friends with their bikes.
Most college campuses have a lot of bikes that come up for sale at the end of the school year. Sometimes there are police auctions. Students often get rid of their bikes at the end of the year. Some of these are decent bikes. I've seen some that would make excellent touring bikes.
Get to the point of knowing what you are doing -- it's a good feeling, and you'll be much more independent.
