I'm at 6,001 miles as of yesterday - may take a short ride today so the final total may be a tiny bit higher at the end of the year.
I rode 6,000 miles in 2009 only because I looked up in November and realized I could hit the 6,000 mile level if I "pushed" a bit, and I really had to work to squeeze in rides in December to hit the goal.
I started 2010 decidedly *not* focused on hitting 6,000 miles again, but again in October I realized I could easily get to 6,000 if I just stayed on course. Well, November ended up being a slow cycling month for me, so here I was in December "pushing" a bit to hit the miles. I guess it's the good news/bad news of mileage goals -- the bad news is feeling a bit "obligated" to stay on the bike through the holidays, the good news is that I haven't really had to push that hard, just stay on the bike every day, good weather and bad, and get the miles in.
And based on the holiday eating I've done, I definitely needed to stay on the bike!
I put fenders on my "fast summer bike" this Fall, which has really helped. I now have 2 bikes fully fendered up and ready for bad-weather rides; that's made this fall and winter's miles very enjoyable.
