I logged every ride for a while, then I left my Garmin out in the rain and it stopped working. I found myself less motivated by not having weekly stats available. I think that's bad, and it shows a weakness on my part, but such is life. Some of us do better with the stats staring us in the face (or taunting us when they do not measure up).

In my professional life, there is a constant war with statistics. Every month I prepare a report showing the number and type of case I have heard and disposed of. The judicial system is not designed to be efficient - that pesky idea of "due process" keeps getting in the way of efficiently disposing of cases. Judges can be very efficient, and get their numbers up very effectively, by not listening to people and ramming through bunches of cases. So a balance is necessary - listen enough to be fair and thorough, but not so much that you can't get through the docket. Give time to those cases that need the time, and cut off those people (and lawyers) who don't. And always move the cases.
