Yes, I think that is exactly what happened. Once the seller could tell other people, hey this stuff is sold, all of a sudden, people with mild interest got off the fence. "Hey, this must be a great deal!" "Has the buyer picked the stuff up yet?" "Hey, I'm right down the street, can be there in 15 minutes, and can pay you a premium." "I bet that guy won't really show anyway." etc. It will take a patient and knowledgable flipper to make a good return, given the price and risk involved in such a large transaction.
While I know that you are a patient and knowledgable flipper capable of making a good return, the fact that it will require so much work, space and time is why I think he was priced too high. I guess there was an advantage for a flipper in that they won't have to deal with any other bikes/searching for quite a while.
It's going to be a longggg and cold winter sitting on that stash until spring.
