I only ride on the road with experienced cross-overs from BMX or MTB because they usually have far superior handling skills, especially in emergent situations. Reflex reactions to a crash or impending crash are invaluable on the road, where the penalty for failure is normally equal to sliding on sandpaper.
Actually I do trail ride on single track... I have yet to voluntarily ditch... but I do tend to crash at least once each ride. I fully admit I am not the best trails rider out there... my son kicks my butt and he has only been riding a few years.
