I was reading a Crazy Guy on a Bike Journal the other day and he was in Cairo trying to get a Libyan visa and was specifically asking for a 'transit' visa instead of a 'tourist' visa. Not sure if one or the other is more difficult to obtain, but I got the impression that a transit visa might be appropriate for someone in your situation where you have more of a general itinerary rather than a scheduled point of departure.
