I understand your point, but I actually think that self-adjusting, never-has-cables-to-get-grimy, multiple-button-optional electronic shifting would be really useful on a commuter bike. Add the ability to NOT need recharging ever and it would fit right in with generator lighting to reduce daily bike care even more.

Shimano went halfway with their Coasting self-charging automatic shifting IGH system, but I think something like Di105 would be slick.
