Really? There are lots of cheap (in both ways) niner mountain bikes out there. What's the additional challenge with a cross bike? Bigger chainrings?

It depends on the market demand. The monstercross won't come out til summer due to the challenge of making an affordable frame that will accept really fat 700C tires.
