Nice Lejeune, Lynn, but what I was more interested in (at least for this thread) is: where are the bikes with the late 70's French components? There were dozens of late 60's-early 70's models with Simplex Criterium-Stronglight 93-Mafac Racer-etc, the classic bike-boom French racer set-up. It's mostly very good stuff but still considered a step below Campy Record. But the next generation of French components can hold its own with anything. I consider it at least the equal of Campagnolo, Dura Ace, etc. in looks as well as funcionality. And it still kept its distinctive style. It took them a while but they really got it right. I bought a set of Maillard 700 pedals in 1977, have put I don't know how many miles on them in all sorts of conditions, and they're still the smoothest things ever. But did any manufacturers actually use these components on their bikes? There's the PY-10, and then what? I saw a Motobecane on Ebay France last year with a full set of top-end French components (Huret Success derailleurs), but that is all. I'm considering a bike like this for a future project, but the only problem is that they don't seem to actually exist. Of course I could cobble one together, but I was just curious as to why, when they finally had really first-class material to work with, the French (and others, for that matter) didn't seem to take advantage of it.
