Seems to me that part of the issue with commuting expense -- and the need to justify them -- is that most of us start from the premise that bike commuting ought to be free or nearly free. Which is absurd if you think about it. You wouldn't assume that commuting by car or transit would be free, but for some reason we think of bike commuting expenses as something we need to justify to ourselves or significant others.
