Personally I've gotten stuck more than once in my Egg-Beaters. But that happens.
The real issue here is whether the pedal will let go if your lower leg is torqued. Most pedal systems WILL. By contrast, cages and straps do not disengage under torque.
When I switched to clipless, I could jump out of both straps simultaneously. However, it took me a while to get the motion of "jumping" out of the pedals down pack. I still haven't been able to duplicate this on Egg Beaters after 5 months of use. It's still one pedal, and than another. But I can pretty much ALWAYS get one foot down whenever I need to.
