Assuming it is the chain - which makes sense - Is there a (practical at home) way to remove the grit?

I have master links on both chains, so I can easily remove them for something more aggressive. However I thought that was what I was doing with the hosing and thorough use of the degreaser/cleaner in the Park chain cleaner.

Thanks,

If you've cleaned the drivetrain, most likely it is residual dirt/sand that you did not get out of the chain - this is difficult to do comprehensively. Test the pedals, indepedently, test the bottom bracket with the chain off the crankset.
