My boss in the dot com days raced big sailboats. She had a 46 foot thing which didn't look unusually different from another "sailboat" (I have no clue on boats but it was long, wide in the middle, had a tiny tail, and it had a tall mast) but she'd sometimes remark on carbon or kevlar if I mentioned it. I guess the (kevlar and etc) sails cost $10-25k or more. They had some carbon rope cranker thing too but I have no idea how much that thing cost. And this was a hobby! I asked how far they could go, and if it had quarters below. It did. Her future husband and her (and their crew I guess) won the leg down to the Bahamas (from Manhattan) in their club's annual race. They didn't win the return leg though. Here I am thinking the races are from NYC to LI and back.

I thought car racing was expensive but holy smokes.

I just remembered she drove a Porsche too. I missed out on the rush, got in just in time to see things deflate.
