Bikes: 2011 Raleigh Clubman....Next Hardtail Mountain with Street Tires

I think I understand a pinch flat...........Is it when you hit a sharp egde like a pothole and it cuts the inner tube..........Will curb jumping do this to a 1 3/8" tire?
