Thanks for the advice. I pulled the chains and ran them through 3 mineral spirit baths in a coffee can. While they were soaking I checked the pedals and BBs and they seemed fine. When the solvent came out clean I let them dry for 12 hours, installed them and lubed with fresh teflon wax. They ride like new bikes! My bride was very pleased
