Subwoofers were part of the equation, but they were always used in moderation: a typical high-end build (several thousand $$$) had only one subwoofer in a modest enclosure, but that enclosure was carefully and thoughtfully designed and built, and the rest of the components were chosen with lots of careful consideration. Today, everyone just wants to fill their trunk space with as many crap subwoofers as will fit. It's stupid.
