I had a great commute this morning, the first decent distance I've ridden in a couple of weeks, probably 18 mile round trip. Wichita got a nice snowfall 2 weeks ago and I got to commute about 5 miles round that day, but then we had ice on and off after that so I've just ridden short distances or driven since then.
My job has me going to different sites around town for each day, and I have to be presentable as I check into the front office. That's been a challenge compared to my old job where I had the server room to change in. So its riding in street clothes and trying not to sweat too much. I love my new long sleeve wool undershirts, that makes it much easier. With it being 17 degrees this morning, I had to bundle up (but not too much!) I wore my standard dockers and polo shirt, with a cotton cardigan topped by my great old supplex nylon shell. I use a fleece scarf around my neck up to my chin (under my helmet strap) and a fleece cap. I bought but didn't like a windproof cap a few years ago, just recently got the idea to cut it up and use a section as a helmet liner, works well. I wore my windproof face covering today, that kept me plenty warm and allowed me to breathe warm air. I had modified this, adding some fleece in front of the mouth opening, to filter and warm the air before it came in.
Glasses fogged quite a bit but that's not too big of a deal. I had lights galore on my Surly LHT, helmet mounted rear blinkie and front spot, along with bike mounted blinkies front and rear and a 6v headlamp. No problem with cars, it was just a pleasant ride as the sun came up in my rear view mirror and I rode along some nice roads. Most of it was along my former commuting route, but the city recently adding bike lanes to a significant part of the route, nice!
I was fairly presentable as I got here, but one of the kids noticed when I went to write on the board that I had a heart shaped spot on my back from sweat. They thought it was cute that it was shaped like a heart. Just one of the costs of commuting!
