There is no preferred method. This falls into the category of saving damaged parts that would otherwise be scrapped. If wat you did in the past worked for you I'd continue doing it that way, only trying to get it closer, if possible. In your case, I'd see if I could overcorrect to the outside a bit, then dress it out with a file. Also brake shoes will wear a high spot smooth, but a low spot will live forever.
