I sit in a cubicle surrounded by other cubicles. I can hear everyone around me.
Recently, there were 2 girls/ladies put into the empty cubes next to me.
These 2 girls do not understand the idea of "cubicle etiquette."
The smells that these girls bring with them to work are insane. If it doesn't smell like strawberry, it smells like baby powder, and if it doesn't smell like baby powder, it smells like coconut, and if it doesn't smell like coconut, it smells like beef stew. I'm freaking out over here.
There is sort of an unspoken rule around here that you shouldn't be intruding into other peoples spaces with your stench. So eat your stinky lunch in the kitchen, and use a non-offensive lotion if you absolutely need to lather up all day long. Chances are that your neighbor doesn't want to smell like Victoria's secret with a side of beef stew when he goes home. The HR lady is really funny about actually telling people this though, so problems like this are always kind of awkward.
One day this week, one girl brought particularly stinky lunch back to her desk. Everyone here smelled it, but no one would say anything to her. I was trying not to say anything too, but then girl #2 arrived at the desk and made some comment about "ooh, that smells good!" And I kind of lost it. I loudly mentioned that it did NOT smell good, and I made some comparisons to some things that I thought it smelled like, and how no one really wanted to sit in that stench. One of the things I compared it to was a dead body (it was a really stinky lunch). Well, it turns out that this girl's mother had just died, and I made her cry.
On one hand, I feel bad about that. But on the other hand, well, I'm not sure how I feel about it. Yes, I sort of flipped my lid a little, but how am I supposed to handle it when things get bad enough that I'm flipping my lid?! I've been here 10 years, and there has never been a smell problem this bad.
Whatever. As it turns out, my comment fixed the problem anyway.
