By definition, the verb "race" means "competition", as in "compete in a race" If you are there just "for the experience," then you are not "racing", you are "participating." Some people participate in events like marathons, but only a few are there racing in competition for meaningful results. Many people ride their track bikes on a velodrome for exercise or fun, which is fine and dandy, but they are not racing.
