Bikes: 2010 Specialized Allez Triple

Shimano 105 PD-5700 and Shimano R540. Same pedals?

Going to switch to clipless, picked up some Shimano 105 PD-5700's for $71.99, but also saw some Shimano R540's for $49.99. Curious what the difference is because from I can tell, looks about the same with the same number of bearings. Other than the plastic vs metal body, and minor weight difference is there any other difference?

Someone at my LBS told me that they thinned down the front clipping in area to make it easier and smoother to get in and out of and the stainless steel body makes them more durable. Is this true? Is it work the $20? I bike roughly 400-500 miles a month with one ride being a century.
