I agree with both of these statements.

I've known some good mechanics that work at Performance and REI. It seems like the older mechanics work at those places. I'm not sure why. Maybe less drama or more stability or better pay/hours. Not sure, but I did notice that. At my local REI all of the mechanics are 50+ and know their sh*t.
