creaks and clicks can come from anywhere. Just last spring I was working on a bike for a friend, his BB was making some noise so i thought a good examination and regrease was in order. When i got the cups off, two acorns fell out and landed in my tub of grease. My best guess is that it was stored outside without a seatpost in the fall when the squirrels would have been storing nuts for the winter.

Just saying don't put all your effort into one spot or problem, might not be your chain.
