Stephen Helms, 31, of Charlotte, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with a fatal hit-and-run collision Thursday ngiht involving a bicyclist in Monroe. He also was charged by Wingate police with DWI. Monroe Police

Family and friends have scheduled a memorial service, called "A Celebration of Roy's Life," at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Triumphant Word Church, 824 Clarence Secrest Road, in Monroe.


Roy Dean Mittelsteadt had been riding a bicycle to and from work - an 8-mile trek between Porter Ridge High and his family's home in Monroe - for about a year to save money to help his children pay for college.
