You don't say what type of RD you would consider, but if you are willing to go modern, you can get a medium or long cage modern 10 speed RD and it will index with 8 speed, or a 7 speed freewheel, for that matter. I do this with a long cage and a 34T on my wife's bike, and a medium cage on a 28T on one of my bikes. A 7 speed freewheel opens a lot more possibilities.
explain this please. How will a 10 sp mech index with my 8 speed stuff? Will it just have two extra clicks that dont do anything assuming I set the limit screws for my 8 speed cassette? This is an option I'd consider as I didnt realize this would work....
