But what's the point of being some uber cyclist if you can't even run or swim a mile, or worse risk injury playing ball with your kids. In my opinioin, fitness is about well-rounded fitness. I'd be willing to bet that most pros hit the gym or some other sort of cross training.

Right on! Even Lance hits the gym, at least during the off season, you can tell he's well rounded, enough to look at his upper body and arms.
