And yet you hear of people like the OP going 20 mph who crack helmets and get away unscathed. Your line "I have been known to put it on if the conditions warrant it" cracks me up; you don't get to pick when you're going to have an unexpected fall; that's why they're unexpected. All of sudden you need one, but didn't think the conditions warranted it. Oh well.
