There are many advantages of the bb30/90 design, but per your question about the retaining clips it is necessary to state that one of the main advantages is manufacturing. The majority of modern bottom brackets is that the shells have to be machined from both sides either to produce threads or to create shoulders for bearings or cups. The process for bb30/90 is much simpler as it is machined straight through, this minimized machine time and significantly decreases the number of machined and non-concentric bb shells. Instead of a bearing shoulder there is a circlip/rataining clip/snap ring that goes into the slot on the inside of the shell to produce a bearing shoulder. There are so many advantages to bb30... Ill end my rant.
