If you want to avoid looking like a total Fred (I'll let someone else explain what that is), avoid the team jersey if you're not on the team. On the other hand, at least 95% of road cyclists are Freds and you'll give off enough other signals that you won't be able to hide it. Bottom line is wear what you like, ride the way you want, and don't let internet pinheads convince you they know anything.
