I got my set from a local bike shop -- a lot of shops do FG/SS conversions and get some of these laying around that no one uses (because most folks use STI these days)

Mine were index for 6-speed and friction, so I use the friction mode with an 8 speed cassette.

Friction shifting a 9-speed cassette is a pain IMO -- but people do it.
