I graduated college in Pittsburgh this May & took a job in San Diego. I traveled between these locations by a combination of bicycle and train, transporting some of my possessions with me.
My move meets the time and distance criteria for tax deductibility.
The relevant law is here:
http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/26...7----000-.html
It says:
For purposes of this section, the term “moving expenses” means only the reasonable expenses—
(A) of moving household goods and personal effects from the former residence to the new residence, and
(B) of traveling (including lodging) from the former residence to the new place of residence.
I certainly think a bicycle is a reasonable means of travelling from a former residence to a new one.
Since I took detours to the Pacific Northwest and San Francisco for sightseeing/visiting, all of my trip wouldn't be deductible. But it certainly seems to me that, say, my train ride from Fargo to Whitefish should be deductible, as well as the camping fees for many of the state parks along the way.
Anyone have any experience with this area of law? Obviously, nothing on the internet should be treated as good legal advice. But references to any precedents or anyone to contact with knowledge could be fun.
