I don't skid and I stop all the time (well, sometimes in the rain - but never to stop). have you ever tried putting some back pressure on your drivetrain? It works really well and your $30 tires will last longer than three months.
People that think rear wheel skidding is a good way to stop a bike are the same people that think fixies take some sort of magical skill to ride and that if someone unfamiliar with fixed gears got on one they'd be immediately thrown off.
