Bought a hybrid as my first adult bike. It was pretty nice and definitely got me hooked on cycling. It helped me loose a good 20lbs by commuting to work and riding with my wife on weekends.
A year or so later I bought a nice carbon road bike and only used my hybrid as a commuter. After a while I wanted to ride my road bike in bad weather but didn't wanna mess up such a nice bike. So I sold my hybrid on Craigslist for $400 and bought a 2 year old aluminum road bike that I could put full fenders, racks, etc... on for $450
Now the aluminum bike is my winter training bike, commuter, and the bike I use when I don't care about speed. I've got mountain bike clipless pedals on there so I can take it to a store to pick something up and still walk around normally.
To the OP, if you feel that your hybrid is nice but you've outgrown or feel that a different bike might be more of what you need, you could sell your hybrid on Craigslist or something and pick up another bike by putting in a little of your own money to make up any difference. Hybrids are good for people just getting in to cycling, and for that reason alone I like them a lot. They're like a "gateway drug"
