I think steel has settled in to its place in the market. I don't know it's exact share, but I don't think it has dramatically changed recently. Road cycling is growing as a sport and proportionally, we are seeing growth in steel frame builders.

I actually think that utility cycling and fixed gear riders are as much a part of the popularity of botique builders.

Personally, I would look as hard at a Curtlo or English as I would at any other modern frame. Curtlo does a S3 True Temper frame for $1200. Damn tempting if you ask me.
