I've been counting trips to work, of course, along with any trip that I consider to be replacing a car. For example, going to the gym. It's too far away for me to walk, so if I take the bike, I'm saving a car trip, so I count that as a commute. I count exercise rides on my road bike as "total miles" only.
I thought I read that was the correct way to do it.
