HD, it really sounds to me like the crossrail is best for you. What you describe is exactly what the dual sport bikes are designed for. The crosstrail will have a better geometry for road riding. It will be in between a road bike and mountain bike. If you are doing 90% of your riding on the road then go for the bike that is better on the road. I have a Scott sportster and have used it on single track and road it over logs, roots, etc. It performed just fine.
The jamis allegro x series look like nice dual sport bikes also.
One thing to note though, if the crosstrai is like my sportster you will no be able to get a super wide tire like the 29er tires on it. If you wanted knobby tires for the woods when its muddy you would probably need a cyclocross tire. That is what I did and it worked out great.
