the more you unscrew the screw, the tighter the cable. so for brakes it will pull the brakes into the rim. for RD it will move closer to the cogs and for FD it will move closer to the big ring. just think what does pulling on the cable do.
make sure there the cable is nice and tight before adjusting with the screw.
