Mountain Bike or Road Bike?

Well I am down 25 lbs so far this year and plan on doing some bike riding this spring to change up my cardio work outs.
I am now 385, but should be down to 375 by the time the snow melts.

I have the Trek 8000 MTB now, and although its a great bike, I do almost all my riding on the paved road, no good trails with in riding distance from the house.

I was going to trade for a road bike, but the shop owner suggested I stick to the mountain bike due to my size, he may be right but wanted to get some opinions here too. I do feel he knows what he is talking about, but also know many on here get wheels that are much better than what comes on bikes.

I do not want to have a horrible incident on a bike, but if they make a road bike HD enough for me, feel I would get more miles that way.

If the Trek is the safest choice right now, not the end of the world, can ride that till I get to a safer weight for a road bike.

Any suggestions?
