I would say this is the point that is being overlooked by all the DIY supporters. It is better to get the tools needed over time, otherwise, OP could blow a couple hundred on just the tools and stand (unless he finds one hell of a deal somewhere...).
Don't need a stand (yes, it is nice but I did numerous bikes before getting a stand). Other than basic tools which he probably already has, he'll need spoke wrenches, cone wrenches, cassette/freewheel tool, chain whip (if a cassette), crank puller and possibly something for the BB. Easily get that for around $60 from Performance Bike Shop. You can spend a lot more but these should be plenty to tear down and put back together. I did a couple of full rebuilds with no more than that.
