Just to confuse things regarding friction shifters.
There was a time when Raleigh sold a production cycle with downtube friction shifters on an internally-geared hub.
The hub was the Sturmey-Archer S5 (five-speed internal hub – similar to the AW hub).
The model of the cycle was called “5-Speed” and looked like a Raleigh Sports.
The shifters were on the downtube. Some were metal, some were plastic.
All friction. No set positions.

They did this around the late 1960s I believe. I probably have one on the floor of my shop – or certainly in storage.
