I have an axle in my hands right now...

Are the threads on yours damaged or just smooth? Many Shimano cassette hub axles are threaded at the ends and have what appears to be just grooves in the center. (Looks like flat worn threads) The flat section is offset to one side. I would assume they're machined this way to eliminate stress risers and to keep you from running the drive side cone in too far.
