or just to see if fixed/single speed is good for your area, pick a gear on your roadie, say the big chainwheel and one of the two or three smallest rear cogs and stay on that gear for a week at a time, this will tell you whether you can do one gear in your area... then when you decide on the best ratio, it will make it easier for you to pick a good ratio for your area
