Trek is lifetime and will offer a discount on non-warranty parts (I've heard different stories about that one).
I don't know how fussy each manufacturer is when it comes to honoring the warranty so you may want to look into that.
As for failures of other parts. I've been told that some pro racers like Mark Cavendish are so strong that they can't use CF handlebars. Guys like him have actually broken them in the middle of a race.
Right, and it seems that the comparably equipped Treks, Specialized and Giants are $400-500 more than the Scott.
