Good advice. And one way to do that is shooting with an open apperature to limit depth of field. Unfortunately the OP's point and shoot may have so mucch depth of field that it's hard to do, other than post production.
Yup, with a sensor that small, you're not getting any type of selective focus unless that thing can focus reeeeealy close.
